Best VPS for AI agents in 2026: Hetzner vs AWS Lightsail vs EC2
An AI agent is a long-running process with bursty CPU, steady memory, and unpredictable outbound traffic. That profile punishes the wrong cloud choice — here are the numbers that matter.
- Cheapest credible host — Hetzner CX33 — 4 vCPU / 8 GB / 20 TB transfer at €6.49 per month.
- Easiest start — AWS Lightsail from $3.50 (IPv6) or $5 with a real IPv4, and the first three months are free.
- Where EC2 loses — Component pricing lands 30–50% above an equivalent Lightsail plan for small workloads.
Most "best VPS" advice is written for websites. An agent is different: it sleeps, then wakes up and runs a browser, a container, or a model call chain for twenty minutes. You need headroom for memory spikes, a price that doesn't punish idle time, and bandwidth you don't have to monitor.
Hetzner: still the value floor
Hetzner's cost-optimized CX line and regular CPX line remain the cheapest credible option for EU-hosted agent workloads (Germany/Finland availability for CX):
- CX23 — 2 vCPU / 4 GB RAM / 40 GB SSD / 20 TB transfer — €3.99/month (rising from €2.99 as of April 1, 2026)
- CX33 — 4 vCPU / 8 GB / 80 GB / 20 TB — €6.49/month
- CPX22 — 2 vCPU / 4 GB / 80 GB / 20 TB — €7.99/month (regular, AMD shared)
Hetzner raised prices across the board in April 2026 — CPX instances rose 2.4× to 2.75× in some configurations — so old blog comparisons are dangerously stale. Even after the increase, the CX33 at €6.49 for 8 GB of RAM remains roughly a third of the equivalent elsewhere.
Trade-off: EU-only data residency, no managed database included, and you own every backup. For a solo operator running one or two agents, that's a fair deal.
AWS Lightsail: simplest on-ramp, and the first three months are free
Lightsail bundles compute, storage, and transfer into one flat price, which is exactly what agent workloads need because agent traffic is bursty:
- $3.50/month — IPv6-only Linux nano, 512 MB RAM, 2 vCPU, 20 GB SSD, 1 TB transfer
- $5/month — adds a public IPv4 address, 1 GB RAM (the realistic entry point)
- $7/month — 1 GB RAM, 2 vCPU, 40 GB SSD, 2 TB transfer
New Lightsail customers get the first three months free, which makes it the cheapest way to prototype an agent host.
The trap: the $5 plan is not where real projects land. Add a managed database ($15/month minimum), snapshots, and a load balancer, and a "$5/month" deployment routinely bills $35–90. Budget for the exit, not the entry.
Easiest start, AWS ecosystem, free trial → Lightsail $5–$7. Bundled transfer and a 3-month free window beat EC2 for anything under 8 GB RAM.
Avoid EC2 for this workload unless you need it. Component pricing (EBS + egress at $0.09/GB + Elastic IP separately) typically lands 30–50% above an equivalent Lightsail plan, and Lightsail-to-EC2 upgrades are supported if you outgrow it.

| Hetzner CX33 (DE/FI) | 4 / 8 GB | 20 TB | €6.49 | n8n + agent + DB on one box |
| Hetzner CPX22 (regular) | 2 / 4 GB | 20 TB | €7.99 | Wider region availability |
| Lightsail nano (IPv6 only) | 2 / 0.5 GB | 1 TB | $3.50 | Tiny jobs, first 3 months free |
| Lightsail + IPv4 | 2 / 1 GB | 2 TB | $5.00 | Easiest AWS on-ramp |
| Lightsail $7 plan | 2 / 1 GB | 2 TB | $7.00 | More storage headroom |
| EC2 equivalent (t4g + EBS + egress) | 1 / 1 GB | metered | ≈$15 | Only if you need AWS services |
Prices as published by Hetzner and AWS in September 2026. Hetzner raised CX/CPX rates in April 2026; older comparisons are stale. EC2 figure is the commonly cited all-in equivalent for a small web workload including 20 GB EBS and outbound transfer.
The sizing math most guides skip
Do this before you buy:
- Add up peak memory, not average. Node.js agents, a browser, and a database in one container set will spike 2–3 GB even when idle sits near 400 MB.
- Check outbound transfer. Browser-automation agents burn bandwidth on page loads and screenshots. Lightsail's bundled 1–2 TB and Hetzner's 20 TB both make this a non-issue; EC2's $0.09/GB does not.
- Price the snapshot and backup story. Hetzner volumes and snapshots are cheap and simple; Lightsail snapshots are per-GB and stack up quietly.
- Plan the parity test. Run your agent for one week on the cheapest plan that fits, watch memory with
htopand disk withdf -h, then size up deliberately.
One more honest note: if you are in India or Southeast Asia and latency to EU regions matters for your agent's web fetching, test round-trip time before committing to Hetzner's Germany/Finland-only CX line. The CPX line has wider availability.
