Google's Gemini Model Gate: What Free and AI Plus Users Lose From October 9

Google has split its Gemini model lineup by subscription tier. Starting October 9, 2026, accounts without a paid plan run on Flash-Lite in the Gemini app, AI Plus keeps Flash but loses Pro, and only AI Pro and AI Ultra retain the full Flash-Lite/Flash/Pro lineup. The change is confirmed on Google's own Gemini help center — with one wrinkle: Google's main limits page still listed all three models for every plan when this was checked on October 5.

The short answer
Update note — October 10, 2026

This article is based on Google's official Gemini Apps Help pages ("Changes to Gemini model access and limits" and "Gemini Apps limits & upgrades", both read October 5, 2026) plus reporting from The Hans India, Times Now, India Today and CellCog. We have not run hands-on tests inside the Gemini app; model names, versions and availability may change.

If you use Gemini for free, your model menu is about to get shorter. Google's Gemini Apps Help center now carries a page titled "Changes to Gemini model access and limits" stating: "Starting in October 2026, there will be changes to model availability for Gemini Apps when you use a personal account." The changes "will start to take effect for users without an AI subscription on October 9th."

The practical effect: model access becomes a function of what you pay. Free accounts get the lightest model. AI Plus subscribers keep a mid-tier option but lose the strongest one. Only AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers keep everything — and gain a new effort control. The change landed days after Google announced Gemini 4 Argon, its most powerful model to date, which is available only to select partners in a limited rollout — the top of the lineup keeps moving up while the bottom gets trimmed.

Who keeps which model

The change page lays out model availability per plan once the changes take effect. Translated from Google's checkmark table:

On top of the lineup change, every model now carries a selectable effort level — low, medium or high. In Google's words, higher effort "will increase the model's ability to complete tasks and provide more thorough answers to queries, but will also use more of your limit." That brings the consumer app closer to controls that already exist in Google AI Studio.

What your plan costs in India

Google AI Plus is priced at ₹399 per month in India, AI Pro at ₹1,950 per month, and AI Ultra starts at ₹6,500 per month, as reported by The Hans India and Times Now. After the change, the difference between the tiers is starker: ₹399 buys Flash, ₹1,950 and above buy Pro. If you bought AI Plus specifically to use Gemini Pro models on a personal account, your reason to upgrade now sits one tier higher.

The usage limits behind the gate

Model access is one lever; usage is the other. The usage limits themselves did not change this time. They date from May 17, 2026 (extended to users under 18 on July 24), when Gemini Apps moved to compute-based usage limits that refresh every 5 hours until a weekly cap. The calculation factors in prompt complexity, features used and chat length. Without a plan you get standard limits; AI Plus runs 2x higher, AI Pro 4x, and AI Ultra 5x or 20x higher than AI Pro depending on the subscription.

Premium features consume the limit faster: media generation (images, video, music), Deep Research, the Pro model, and extended thinking and Deep Think. Note that Deep Think requires the Pro model — which is precisely the model being taken away from the two cheapest tiers. Removing Pro from free and AI Plus accounts removes the single most compute-hungry model from the plans with the smallest limits.

The wrinkle: Google's own pages disagree

Here is the detail most coverage glosses over. When we read Google's pages on October 5, the main "Gemini Apps limits & upgrades" page still showed a Model Access table with Yes for Gemini 3 Flash-Lite, Flash and Pro on all four plans — including without an AI plan. The dedicated change page is newer and carries the October 9 date, so it is the one to plan around. But until Google reconciles the two, free users may see inconsistent information depending on which page they land on. CellCog flagged the same discrepancy the same week.

One more scoping note: the change page covers Gemini Apps on personal accounts. It says nothing about Workspace or school accounts, and nothing about the Gemini API. Developer access to Gemini models is priced separately and is not affected by this consumer gating.

What free users should actually do

Chats keep working on October 9 — on Flash-Lite. Where you will feel the difference is heavy reasoning, long coding prompts and close reading of large files: Google describes Pro as the model that "excels at complex math and coding prompts," and the free tier's context window is 32k tokens against AI Pro's 1 million. Three practical moves:

The broader pattern

Free tiers across AI assistants have been tightening all year, and the logic is the same everywhere: the strongest model becomes the reason to pay. OpenAI gates its best models behind paid ChatGPT tiers, and Google's May 2026 limits change already introduced compute-based caps. This October change completes the structure: free gets fast, paid gets smart, and the top of the lineup (Argon, today) stays exclusive. For readers choosing between assistants, the honest comparison is no longer "which one has the best model" but "which plan tier puts that model in your hands at a price you accept."

Verdict
What is confirmed: Google's Gemini help center states the October 2026 model-availability changes take effect for users without an AI subscription on October 9, 2026; free accounts default to Auto with most prompts going to Flash-Lite (Flash-Lite for all responses if smart selection is off); AI Plus keeps Flash-Lite and Flash but loses Pro with an emailed effective date; AI Pro and AI Ultra keep all three models; effort levels (low/medium/high) consume more of the usage limit; usage limits are unchanged since May 17, 2026.

What is not confirmed: the exact effective date for AI Plus subscribers (Google promises an email), how the discrepancy with Google's main limits page resolves, and any matching change for Workspace accounts or the Gemini API.

The structural point: model access is now the paywall. Free Gemini remains usable for everyday tasks on Flash-Lite, but complex reasoning and coding are being repositioned as subscription features.

Bottom line: from October 9, plan around what each tier actually includes: free = Flash-Lite, AI Plus = Flash, AI Pro/Ultra = Pro. Check the model picker rather than assuming, watch for the AI Plus email before your renewal date, and if your workload is bursty and heavy, compare the API against the subscription before paying ₹1,950 a month for access you might use twice a week.
